A dangerously high flood warning remains in effect across Dorset, following the impact of Storm Chandra, with over 80 similar warnings issued throughout Hampshire and Dorset. This situation has raised alarms, as the term "danger to life" is not used lightly.
In a significant development, residents of Iford Bridge Home Park, located near Christchurch, were evacuated due to rising levels of the River Stour on Wednesday. The severity of the weather was underscored by reports indicating that over 50mm of rain fell across both counties and the Isle of Wight on Tuesday alone, with some areas in Dorset experiencing rainfall amounts three times greater than their average for the month.
As if this wasn’t alarming enough, another rain warning is set to take effect at noon and will last until the early hours of Friday, further compounding concerns about flooding in Dorset and parts of Hampshire.
Emergency services, along with personnel from Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council, are actively assisting those displaced from Iford Bridge Home Park, advising them to gather essentials and relocate pets and vehicles to safer locations. Ron Curtis from the Environment Agency assured the public that residents would be allowed to return home as soon as conditions improve.
The response teams from Dorset Council have been tirelessly working throughout the night to clear debris and address high-risk areas. They shared updates via social media, informing residents that they had deployed gritters to combat icy road conditions resulting from falling temperatures and wet surfaces turning to ice.
The council reported that since flooding began, their crews have responded to more than 200 calls for assistance. There have been numerous incidents across both counties, with drivers needing rescue after becoming trapped in floodwaters. Tragically, there was also a fatal incident in the New Forest where a lorry driver lost his life when his vehicle veered off the road into a river.
In light of growing concerns, Dorset Council addressed comments from the public suggesting that blocked highway drains contributed to the flooding. Councillor Jon Andrews, responsible for place services, acknowledged the public's frustration but clarified that the primary issue was not a lack of drain maintenance. "The extensive flooding we experienced this week stemmed from rapidly swollen rivers, increased groundwater levels, and unprecedented rainfall—not from neglected drainage systems," he explained. He further noted that when rivers and groundwater rise swiftly, the underlying pipes can become overwhelmed, leaving even clear drains with no outlet for excess water, particularly when discharge points are also at capacity.
Simon Bryant, the director of public health for Hampshire County Council and the Isle of Wight Council, urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves. He recommended avoiding contact with floodwaters whenever possible and advised wearing gloves and protective clothing during any clean-up operations.
