Antigoni Buxton, a former Love Island contestant, is making waves in the music industry as she prepares to represent Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest. Her journey to the stage is a fascinating tale of pursuing dreams, overcoming challenges, and embracing unexpected opportunities.
The Power of Dreams and Eurovision
Antigoni's passion for singing and Eurovision began at a young age, inspired by Helena Paparizou's victory for Greece in 2005. This deep-rooted dream led her to audition for Love Island, a decision she doesn't regret. Despite the reality show's focus on romance, it provided her with a platform to showcase her talent and connect with a wider audience.
"Love Island was a great moment because it gave me the chance to introduce myself to a lot of people and now I'm on that path I always wanted to be on," she says.
This unexpected exposure opened doors, and Antigoni is now ready to take on the world of music.
A Star-Studded Music Video
Her music video for the dancefloor banger 'Jalla' is a spectacle, featuring her family, including her mother and grandparents, as well as the iconic Stavros Flatley (Demi). Antigoni's ability to collaborate with such diverse talents showcases her charisma and influence in the industry.
"In the UK, if you had to name a Cypriot thing that's happened, it's that," she says, referring to Stavros Flatley's fame on Britain's Got Talent.
A Warm and Supportive Community
Eurovision, according to Antigoni, is more than just a competition. It's a community that embraces and celebrates diverse cultures. She highlights the positive feedback and support she receives, even from those who initially judge her.
"People still do, but it's a very loving community. It's a really warm, happy, loving, supportive community. Everyone sees that it's a big opportunity to learn about culture, to have fun."
Cyprus' Long-Standing Eurovision Journey
This year marks Cyprus' 42nd Eurovision appearance, a record for participating without a win. Antigoni's performance, complete with pyrotechnics and a literal dance on a table, is a testament to her dedication and the country's determination to make an impact.
Beyond the Win
Despite the high stakes, Antigoni remains focused on her performance and personal growth. She emphasizes the importance of doing her best and making Cyprus proud, regardless of the outcome.
"In terms of my career and in terms of success, the focus is just doing my very best," she says. "If I can leave there and feel like I did myself proud, Cyprus is proud of me, my family and my team, if they're proud and we feel like we did an amazing job that is a win in itself."
Antigoni's journey from Love Island to Eurovision is a testament to the power of pursuing dreams, embracing unexpected opportunities, and finding support in a community that celebrates diversity and talent.
