Canada’s Bold Shift: Dropping the 2035 Gasoline Car Ban Sparks Debate

These measures aim to encourage a gradual transition to electric vehicles without forcing consumers or automakers into a corner.

The mandates had set ambitious targets: 20% EV sales in the near term, rising to 60% by 2030, and 100% by 2035. By pivoting away from a hard ban, the government appears to be prioritizing job preservation and industry stability, especially in the face of tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump on foreign-made autos last year.
